CASCADER

What is Cascader™?

Scrollworks Cascader is a powerful productivity tool which provides access to commonly used Windows folders on the Start Menu. Using Cascader, it is easy to add quick access cascading menus for My Computer, Desktop, Control Panels, Internet History, and many more. Once you’ve experienced the power of having these folders literally at your fingertips, you’ll never want to give it up!

Cascader is amazingly easy to use. Simply select an item to add to your Start Menu. A description of the item is shown. Selecting the Add button puts the item on your Start Menu. Cascader items already on the Start Menu can be removed by selecting them from the list and selecting either the Remove or Remove All button.

Better than DeskMenu!

If you use Microsoft’s DeskMenu system tray applet, you can now instead use Cascader to add the item directly to your Start Menu. In addition access using the mouse, accessing the desktop from your keyboard is now easy as using the Windows Menu key or CTRL+ESC! In addition, Cascader saves memory and space in your system tray because it is not necessary to load an application specifically to access your Desktop.

Find internet sites FAST!

Internet Explorer has a great History feature which can be accessed via the History bar while running the browser. By adding the History menu, Cascader lets you access this history from a cascading menu sorted by date. You’ll never find those web sites faster. This capability alone makes this utility a must for serious web users.

Everything but the kitchen sink!

Adding My Computer to the Start Menu automatically provides menu items for everything in My Computer including Control Panels, Printers, and disk drives. If you’d rather have only a few Cascader menus in your Start Menu, this is the way to to it!

Background

Many Windows 95 Tips and Tricks discuss a technique for adding Control Panels and a few other Windows menus to the Start Menu. The technique takes advantage of how Microsoft implements file type handling in Windows. For example, a common technique is to create a folder on the desktop and rename it:
Control Panel.{21ec2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}

The part of the name before the dot is the name visible to the user. The portion of the name following the dot (also known as the file extension) is the file type of the real Control Panel folder (other common file types include .doc, .xls, and .txt). If this folder is them moved to the Start Menu folder (usually C:\Windows\Start Menu), it will appear as a cascading menu on the Start Menu.

Other similar utilities (such as Microsoft's TweakUI control panel) do this for the user. Unfortunately, not only is this technique undocumented, it often doesn’t work. Different versions of Windows implement this support, known as shell namespaces, differently depending on many different factors such as where these Windows folders are stored and how the namespace handlers are written. What works on one system may not work on another, and many of the standard Windows folders won’t work with this technique on any system.

Cascader™ solves all these problems by using only documented Windows routines to extend the Start Menu, providing seamless access to capabilities which should have been a part of Windows from the very beginning. In addition, Cascader™ provides a simple user interface for quickly adding and removing these items.
